Race: Lucithian

Lucithians are a vampiric race of dark skinned humanoids, typically hailing from a cool and shadowed land known as Shadehallow. They are a noble, orderly people who have become respected throughout Lyr’andor for their intelligence, wisdom, and loyalty. They prize family, honour, and law above all else. They live in homes that stretch wide and tall, displaying the size and prosperity of each family. They are known to make excellent night’s watchmen, huntresses, and scouts.

Wings in the Night Sky

The people of Shadehallow tend to be dark-skinned, a natural adaptation to allow them to slip unseen through the darkest of places. Their flesh adheres to dark purples, blues, greys and blacks. They have short, human-like ears with pointed tips, and tend to be slightly taller than humans in height, with the average male standing around six feet, three inches. Their hair often comes in blondes, purples, blues, greens, blacks, and whites, with length and care being a point of pride for their people. Older, more powerful Lucithians will sprout dark, bat-like wings, that allow them to glide through the night with ease. Winged or without, Lucithians can navigate through darkness with great ease – inborn magical darkvision in their red, purple, blue or white eyes granting them the vision they need to operate under the moon’s loving gaze. While Lucithians prefer to walk the streets when night falls, they harbour little sensitivity to the sun itself, unlike the Vampiric creatures they are often mistaken for. The sun hurts their eyes, causing them to often walk the day in shade.

Vampiric Hunger

Lucithians, like the darker true Vampires, feed on blood to sustain themselves, even from birth. Unlike Vampires, Lucithians do not hunt down mortal victims to prey upon in the night. In fact, the denizens of Shadehallow abhor this behavior, and instead turn to hunting down wild animals, and feasting on their raw meat. This can sustain a Lucithian indefinitely, but it is not the ideal situation. They do crave humanoid blood, though they do not suffer from bloodlust. Instead, families will take willing wards to feed on, mainly from other races, into their homes and families. Wards are protected, treated incredibly well, and respected as if they were truly family. The wards are allowed to leave at any time if they no longer feel comfortable with the relationship they carry with the family they are bonded to.

Lucithians that violate these commonalities of their society are regarded as criminals, fallen individuals who have given in to their base desires. They are shunned by the rest of their race, and often executed should they be caught feeding on an unwilling victim. Lucithians prefer to distance themselves from the image of Vampires as much as they can, and will punish any among them who dare to tarnish that vision.

Family, Bloodlines, and Wards

Family and bloodlines matter greatly to the Lucithians. Loyalty to one’s family is an expectation – and it is not uncommon for larger families to contain multiple units in a single house or neighborhood. Family decisions are often finalized by the Patriarch or Matriarch of the family, despite how large and sprawling the family has become. The typical family structure of large noble human families is observed here, with one exception: The Wards of the family. There are specific rules governing who may take Wards and who may not. Every adult Lucithian is allowed one official Ward, which joins their family, taking the family name as their own and donning their colours. They are to be given room and board. Even a lone Lucithian, travelling in the world is expected to adhere to these guidelines, though travellers sometimes meet the room and board requirement by paying for their ward’s room at inns, and ensuring the procurement of all of their meals. Bonded families, where two Lucithians perform a marriage-like ceremony, where one Lucithian takes the name of the other, and extends the other’s family further, are allowed to have an additional ward per person. If the bonded family then has children, they are allowed one additional ward per child.

Lucithians will end any venture, return from any point in the land, when summoned to aid their family. Large families, and many wards are widely prized, and the largest and oldest of families tend to accumulate the most respect and finance. This, however, does not extend to hybrid families in most Lucithian traditions. While it is acceptable for a bonded couple to use their wards as lovers, it is widely shunned by traditional Lucithians if a Lucithian attempts to perform bonding rituals with a member of another race. Often, those who do are shunned from society, and cut off from their family, a price that not many take lightly.

Logic and Perspective

Lucithians that feed on humanoids extend their lifespans greatly. With their additional time, most Lucithians tend to focus on improving their minds, and setting out to accumulate experiences that grant them greater perspective. Lucithian homes, especially ones of large families, tend to house great libraries. The Lucithians are avid readers, and love a good book or written story. Study is driven into Lucithian younglings from an early age. Lucithian schools are the greatest and most developed of any of the Lyr’andoric races.

This great deal of extra knowledge and wisdom affords the Lucithians a broader perspective than most other races. Lucithians do not mind sitting back, and approaching a given conflict or situation with a strong plan and several backups in mind. They are prized for their advice and problem solving skills, and make excellent teachers and advisors.
